If you've ever wondered what goes into a handmade silver piece, let me take you behind the scenes into my little workshop here in Fife!
Where it all begins
Every silver piece starts with an idea — sometimes a shape I've been sketching, sometimes a customer request, sometimes just a feeling. I source all my raw materials and tools from UK suppliers, so I know exactly what I'm working with from the very start.
The making process
Silver jewellery is a labour of love. Unlike beadwork, which flows quite quickly once you're in the rhythm, silversmithing demands patience and precision. I cut, file, shape, and solder each piece by hand. My son has become my unofficial hammering assistant — and he takes the job very seriously!
The finishing stage is my favourite. Polishing a piece until it catches the light just right is incredibly satisfying. That's the moment it goes from raw material to something truly special.
The not-so-perfect pieces
I'll be honest — not every piece makes it into the shop. My daughters have become expert judges of the "nearly there" pieces, and they're building quite the collection! But that's the beauty of handmade — every piece that does make it to you has been held, checked, and approved with care.
What's coming next
I'm so excited to start incorporating gemstones into my silver work. Imagine deep blue lapis lazuli set in hand-formed silver, or a delicate amethyst wrapped in wire... watch this space! 💜
